My notes about our communications will become part of the clinical record, which I will keep secure in accordance with appropriate guidelines. The information you share with me is confidential and will generally be released only with your written consent. Laws, however, have established some limits or exceptions to confidentiality where information may be released without your consent. These limits of confidentiality include: (1) to prevent imminent (immediate) danger to yourself or others; (2) to report suspected abuse or neglect of a child, disabled adult, or elderly adult; (3) to comply with a court order; (4) to comply with the demand of a minor's parents or legal guardians; or (5) to report a medical or mental healthcare professional's sexual contact with you. In these circumstances, the law and professional ethics establish safety as the highest priority.
To provide the highest level of care, consultation with other licensed professionals is an accepted practice in psychotherapy and counseling. When consultation occurs, your identity will not be revealed. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, I am required to discuss cases with my supervisor.
To protect your confidentiality, if I see you in public, I will acknowledge you only if you approach me first. The Code of Ethics for therapists prevents me from being your social media friend or follower.
In couples counseling, I occasionally meet individually with each partner. Because my client is the couple, I am unable to keep any information confidential which would directly contradict the goals of couples counseling. For example, if a partner in couples counseling discloses infidelity during an individual session, I will counsel with that partner about how to disclose such infidelity to the other partner. Otherwise, couples counseling will be ineffective and must be terminated.
Minors: Please be aware that the law allows your parents the right to access your treatment records. I understand the need for youth to establish a safe, private space; so, I will request that your parents waive their right to access your records. I must notify your parents if I am aware of a risk of self-harm or harm to others. I will discuss the matter with you before I provide them with any information, and together we will address any concerns with your parents.
